The Surprise Revealed & The Introduction

Photographer Todd Fairchild and Sara will be waiting on the north east corner entrance of Central Park West and 77th Street for Peter and Diana to arrive in their chauffeured car.

Photographer Todd Fairchild will be incognito in the background taking photos of Peter helping Diana out of their car. Once they are out of the car and on the sidewalk Reverend Sara will walk up to Diana and Peter, introduce herself and say the following. (Photographer Todd Fairchild will still be in the background secretly taking photos and capturing Diana’s expression):

Diana, it is Peter who has gathered all of us here today to not only surprise you with a special renewal of vows ceremony but to express his deep never-ending love for you and to celebrate your love and your 20 years of marriage! I have had the pleasure of planning this day and this ceremony with Peter for the past few months through emails and today I am thrilled to meet you both and honored to preside over your ceremony of renewal.

Walk from Central Park Avenue West & 81st Street to Shakespeare’s Garden

We will all walk together to Shakespeare’s Garden. Photographer Todd Fairchild will take photos along the way.

Ceremony Begins – Opening Words

Peter and Diana this is a most joyful day in your lives because you have come here to Shakespeare’s Garden to celebrate your love and your 20 years of marriage and to renew your covenant of love, loyalty and friendship with each other. This ceremony signifies a new beginning; a rebirth of your marriage. The sacred vows which you will make to each other today will affirm your love as a sacred commitment and, in doing so will fortify your relationship. I am thrilled to meet you both and honored to preside over your ceremony of renewal.

Your love is a glorious, sacred and magnificent gift. You Love is the reason why this day was chosen to renew your lives together. Love is the reason why you both will give with all your hearts for the good of each other. Love is the reason that together you have become one; one in hope; one in believing in life; one in sharing the coming years. Love should come first; love should be the beginning of and the reason for everything: your love for each other and your love for all those most dear to you.

You first came together as friends and through all these years of friendship, love and marriage you have discovered that one of the most wonderful of all things in life is the discovery of another human being with whom one’s relationship has a growing depth of love and friendship as the years increase. You have shared the joys, blessings, and yes, the challenges, of married life for 20 years. Today you are reminded that the purpose of your marriage is to continue to grow with each other in love and friendship. In renewing your vows today, you will reconfirm your commitment to working together to make your marriage grow and blossom in the years to come.

Often it is said that love that makes the world go around and, indeed this is true but, it is friendship that helps keeps our whirling existence balanced. True friendship provides so many of the essentials for a happy healthy life. Friendship is the foundation on which to build a relationship that will persevere through the wind storms of life, it is the mortar which bonds us together in harmony, and it is the serene, warm protection we sometimes need when the world outside seems cold and chaotic. True friendship holds a mirror to our shortcomings and failings, without destroying our sense of worthiness. True friendship nurtures our hopes, supports us in our disappointments, and encourages us to grow to our best potential. Today, your pledge to each other is not only your love, but also the strength, warmth and, most importantly, the fun of true friendship. May you continue to love, laugh, and celebrate each other forevermore!

Honoring Loved Ones Unable to Be Here in Person

I will now repeat my quote from the beginning of this ceremony because it is relevant not only for you as husband and wife but also for all of those in your lives that you hold most dear:

“Love should come first; it should be the beginning of and the reason for everything; your love for each other and your love for all those most dear to you”.

With this in mind let us call forth your loved ones who, although unable to be here today in person today are always deeply connected to you no matter where you go:

  • Diana’s parents Lincoln and Barbara and their respective married partners Maria and Dave.

  • Diana’s brother, Ryan, his partner Lynsey and their beautiful boy Sonny and of course, Granny Nora!

  • And, your “babies!” Your two dearly loved dachshunds, Douglas and Freddie!!

Diana, Peter has asked me to remind you that” Douglas and Freddie send you lots of love!”

Peter’s Parents, Ken and Dorothy

We will now honor Peter’s Mum, Dorothy and his Father, Ken whose love will always be a most important part of Peter’s life.

Today we pause to reflect upon those who have shaped our character, molded our spirits and touched our lives. May we remember the memories we have shared and the everlasting impact they have made upon our lives.

Although death has separated us physically, faith and love have bound us eternally. Though we cannot see you, we know you hare here. Though we cannot touch you, we feel the warmth of your smile.

Reading Two – By Captain Corelli – Love is a Temporary Madness

Love is a temporary madness, it erupts like volcanoes and then subsides. And when it subsides you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your root was so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part. Because this is what love is. Love is not breathlessness, it is not excitement, it is not the promulgation of promises of eternal passion. That is just being in love, which any fool can do. Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away, and this is both an art and a fortunate accident. Those that truly love have roots that grow towards each other underground, and when all the pretty blossoms have fallen from their branches, they find that they are one tree and not two.

Reverend Sara’s Homily

When we first fall madly in love we are in that glorious state of “temporary madness” mentioned in the reading. Love is fresh and new, it’s like a firework in the sky, erupting in passion. But, this glorious state of passion cannot last forever and, it is then, when the fireworks have gone that one must decide if the relationship one has formed with one’s partner has created a deep foundation that reaches beyond the fiery passion. Couples who come to this juncture in their relationship and are able to thrive together in the years ahead, are those who have created a strong, profound and lasting relationship foundation. This is done through accepting the cycles of life and marriage, weathering the inevitable storms of life together, through believing in and caring about each other, working as a team toward mutual goals, growing together as a couple and honoring what really matters. It is then that two people realize what true love, unity and marriage is all about.

You are on the threshold of a new and wonderful beginning in your marriage. Your relationship has a deep and long history and surely a strong foundation after all of these years.

Your marriage has indeed brought you both wonderful blessings and, as life inevitably does to all of us, a multitude of challenges. Yet, together as a couple, you have navigated through the difficult times and utilized these challenges to grow in wisdom, love, compassion and understanding.

Your lives have become inextricably woven together like a beautiful tapestry. In your journey through the years ahead may your love with all your heart, laugh often, share and celebrate the magnificent opportunities and adventures inherent in this exciting new beginning and new season in your lives and in marriage.

Your love is here and now, real and true, and it is the most important thing in your lives. May you honor the gift of love that you have been given. For, if you make your relationship the number one priority in your lives your love will be a promise that will always be kept, a fortune that can never be spent, a seed that can flourish in even the most unlikely place. It is in truly understanding this wisdom that your love will never fade but instead will continue to be blessed with magical joy.

Vows

Peter to Diana

My darling Diana, it was 20 years ago today, that we first pledged our commitment to one another, but it seems just like yesterday that I was standing across from you, my beautiful bride.

We have been through a lot together – laughter and tears, joy and sorrow – and through all those times, I can honestly say, I have loved you every step of the way.

Today, I want to renew those vows again and pledge my love and life to you.

I promise to be there for you in sickness and health, in middle and old age and in good and bad hair days! Whether you feel thin, fat, beautiful, ugly, fit or out of shape, I will always think that you are perfect – perfect for me.

I am here to be your shoulder to cry on, your lover and your best friend. You are my girl, my darling, my angel. You are simply my world.

I have been blessed for the last 20 years and I cannot wait to spend the rest of my life with you! I love you.

Diana to Peter

As we face the future together, I promise to stand by your side
I vow to be there for you always
When you are sad, I will dry your tears
When you are scared, I will comfort your fears
When you are worried, I will give you hope
When you are confused, I will help you cope
When you fall, I will catch you
When you cry, I will comfort you
When you laugh, I will share your joy
And when you are lost, and can’t see the light,
I will be your beacon, shining ever so bright
This is my oath; I pledge to the end
You are my lover, you are my friend
Love Bracelet to Diana from Peter

Diana, trying to convey his deep never-ending love for you, Peter would like to give you a most special and beautiful token. May this lovely gift always remind you of how deeply he loves you!

Peter Will Now Say:

Diana, I give you this bracelet as a symbol of my love and of the vows I have spoken today. May this bracelet forever remind you that I love you with all my heart!

These are The Hands

Peter and Diana, please now join hands and look upon the hands of your beloved with loving eyes and listen to these words I say to you:

These are the hands of your best friend, vibrant, strong and full of love for you, that are holding yours on your wedding day, as you promise to love each other today, tomorrow, and forever. These are the hands that will work alongside yours, as together you continue building your future.

These are the hands that will passionately love you and cherish you through the years, and with the slightest touch, will comfort you like no other. These are the hands that will hold you when fear or grief fills your mind. These are the hands that will countless times wipe the tears from your eyes; tears of sorrow, and tears of joy. Lastly, these are the hands that even when wrinkled and aged, will still be reaching for yours, still giving you the same unspoken tenderness.

Closing Words -Pronouncement

Now that you have reaffirmed your love and commitment to each other by your vows and the giving and receiving of Diana’s bracelet I affirm your renewed promises to each other. May you now continue in your journey through life as husband and wife in peace, joy, love and celebration. May you go forward together from here and know that you have nothing to fear, as your love is strong, your intention clear and truthful. May you wake each day with gratitude for the blessing of your love and share all you have. Know that Divine grace is always within you, always there to guide you, always blessing you as husband and wife.
